Dr. John Baugh, of Washington University in St. Louis. 

“Linguistic Diversity and Discrimination in the US and South Africa”

Dr. Baugh is a professor of Psychology, and has his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania.  His recent work includes research involving linguistic profiling and prejudice, which he will be speaking on during the conference.

We recommend the Park Inn, conveniently located within walking distance of the university, or the Wingate Inn, which provides shuttles service between the airport and to the university. 6.     Handouts and Photocopies:

If you plan on having a handout for your presentation, plan on at least 60 copies. Since there are no convenient copy facilities nearby, you will need to have prepared your photocopies in advance.

The Yumi Nakamura Prize in Linguistics

The Yumi Nakamura Prize in Linguistics has been established to honor the memory of Ms Yumi Nakamura, a Linguistics student who died at UTA in January 2000. Her family and the Program in Linguistics have contributed funds to be awarded to the best student papers at the UTA Student Conference in Linguistics. A maximum of 3 prizes will be awarded in amounts up to $400 USD.

All students presenting papers are eligible to be included in the competition for the prize. The prize will be awarded at the Friday evening session. The judges (consisting of faculty and students) will use the following criteria in awarding the prize:

The paper should not be a review or summary of other people's work.  Originality may include a topic, a set of data, contribution to theory, or innovative application of a theory

significance of paper's topic

The paper should be of some significance in the study of a language (or language family) or a discipline within linguistics

clarity of the presentation

The speaker should not only know the subject, but present it clearly to the audience so that the audience can follow the train of through

depth and thoroughness of analysis

The speaker should know the theory well, not just enough to handle the paper.  The speaker should demonstrate knowledge of their theoretical position in the filed.  They must analyze the data, not merely describe it.  Theory and data should be appropriately integrated.

The speaker should present the material in an interesting and informative way

question and answer

In answering questions, the speaker should demonstrate knowledge of both the data and theory that goes beyond the limits of the presentation.  Questions should be answered in a clear and precise manner.

 Meeting Description: The UTASCILT is a student-led conference specifically designed to give graduate students a chance to present their original research. This is a great opportunity to join students from across America and around the world to present research on language.

Papers for this conference are invited in all areas of linguistics, including the area of TESOL and the area of endangered languages.  Our keynote speaker will be Dr. John Baugh, of Washington University in St. Louis.  Dr. Baugh is a professor of Psychology, and has his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania.  His recent work includes research involving linguistic profiling and prejudice, which he will be speaking on during the conference.  Reflecting Dr. Baugh’s work, we will be including a special session entitled Language, Identity and Human Rights, and encourage all students with research in these areas to submit.  We also encourage and will be accepting submissions outside of this theme. 

Students from any educational institution are encouraged to submit their research and share insights they have discovered in the field. Presenters can choose between oral and poster presentations. Oral presentations will last 15 minutes with 5 minutes for discussion and questions. An allotment of time will be set aside for poster presentations and discussion. This is a great opportunity to develop professional skills! The three best presentations will be awarded the Yumi Nakamura Memorial Prize in Linguistics (up to $400.00 USD).  Poster and oral presentations are considered, accepted and judged as equal counterparts.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday, September 14, 2007. Notifications of acceptance will be distributed in early October, 2007. Abstracts should be written on a single page (500 words or less) in Times New Roman, font 12, with one additional page for graphs and/or references. Electronic submissions are preferred and the text of the e-mail should include 1) your name, 2) affiliation, 3) address, phone number, e-mail address, 4) title of paper, and 5) type of presentation: oral or poster; however, if submitting by mail, please provide 5 copies of your anonymous abstract with the title of the paper at the top and a 3'' x 5'' index card including the following information:

2. Affiliation
3. Address, phone number, and e-mail address
4. Title of paper
5. Type of presentation: oral or poster
