Keynote Speaker

Teresa Jade, Senior Manager, Linguistic Technology, H5 Technology.

(Speaking: Nov 3 10:45 - 12:00 p.m)

Teresa Jade leads H5’s Linguistic Technology group, managing the conceptual and linguistic modeling that configures H5’s software to replicate expert judgments in a variety of domains. Ms. Jade specializes in corpus analysis, lexicon development, grammar development, process and system architecture, and discourse analysis. Before joining H5, Ms. Jade was a computational linguist at Discern Communications, an SRI International spin-off, where she worked to create a marketable question-answering system. Ms. Jade has extensive expertise in innovatively blending Information Extraction and Information Retrieval approaches to solve problems in Natural Language Processing. Ms. Jade holds two M.A. degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington, in German and in linguistics with an emphasis on computational linguistics and discourse analysis. She earned a B.A. with honors from Tennessee Technological University.

Registration entitles the presenter to a free copy of abstracts and free entrance to the welcome party.

2.     Accommodations:

We recommend the Park Inn, conveniently located within walking distance of the university, or the Wingate Inn, which provides shuttles service between the airport and to the university. You may make your reservations by contacting the hotel directly. 3.     Parking permit:

If you will be driving and need a temporary parking permit at UTA during the conference, please let us know when you submit your registration. Parking permits will be prepared for the registered attendees free of charge.

4.     Length:

Each timeslot consists of 20 minutes to present, and 10 minutes of question/answer.  Although the original call for papers suggested the timeslot was 15 minutes to present with 5 minutes for questions, we have increased the time limit for your convenience.  You need not extend your presentation due to this;  however, you will be given more time if needed.

If you plan on having a handout for your presentation, plan on at least 60 copies. Since there are no convenient copy facilities nearby, you will need to have prepared your photocopies in advance.

Registration:

The Yumi Nakamura Prize in Linguistics

The Yumi Nakamura Prize in Linguistics has been established to honor the memory of Ms Yumi Nakamura, a Linguistics student who died at UTA in January 2000. Her family and the Program in Linguistics have contributed funds to be awarded to the best student papers at the UTA Student Conference in Linguistics. A maximum of 3 prizes will be awarded in amounts up to $400 USD.

All students presenting papers are eligible to be included in the competition for the prize. The prize will be awarded at the Friday evening session. The judges (consisting of faculty and students) will use the following criteria in awarding the prize: (coming soon)

The 14th Annual University of Texas at Arlington Student Conference in Linguistics and TESOL

 Meeting Description: The UTASCILT is a student-led conference specifically designed to give graduate students a chance to present their original research. This is a great opportunity to join students from across America and around the world to present research on language.
 
Call Deadline: September 15, 2006
Papers for this conference are invited in all areas of linguistics, including the area of TESOL and the area of endangered languages. Students from any educational institution are encouraged to submit their research and share insights they have discovered in the field. Presenters can choose between oral and poster presentations. Oral presentations will last 15 minutes with 5 minutes for discussion and questions. An allotment of time will be set aside for poster presentations. This is a great opportunity to develop professional skills! The three best presentations will be awarded the Yumi Nakamura Memorial Prize in Linguistics (up to $400.00 USD).

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday, September 15, 2006. Notifications of acceptance will be distributed in early October, 2006. Abstracts should be written on a single page (500 words or less) in Times New Roman, font 12, with one additional page for graphs and/or references. Electronic submissions are preferred and the text of the e-mail should include 1) your name, 2) affiliation, 3) address, phone number, e-mail address, 4) title of paper, and 5) type of presentation: oral or poster; however, if submitting by mail, please provide 5 copies of your anonymous abstract with the title of the paper at the top and a 3'' x 5'' index card including the following information:

Address, phone number, and e-mail address

4. Title of paper
5.
Type of presentation: oral or poster
