John H. Esling comes to the 10th Annual UTA Student Conference in Linguistics from the University of Victoria where he is Professor of Linguistics. Dr. Esling also has the distinction of being the Secretary of the International Phonetic Association.  His credentials include a B.A. in History, Political Science and Languages from Northwestern University, an M.A. in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Phonetics from the University of Edinburgh. He taught at the University of Leeds before arriving at the University of Victoria in 1981. His main work is in the areas of Phonetics and Applied Linguistics, and his research is on the auditory categorization of voice quality and on the phonetic production of laryngeal and pharyngeal speech. He is the author of the University of Victoria Phonetic Database on CD-ROM and an editor of the Handbook of the IPA, having also participated in the development of several phonetics teaching and speech analysis software programs.
