LINGUA is a student-run linguistics organization at The University of Texas at Arlington. Nearly every semester, Lingua hosts lectures in linguistics and related fields given by faculty and scholars from the UT Arlington Department of Linguistics and TESOL, GIAL, and other organizations and schools. In addition, Lingua organizes the annual student linguistics conference at UT Arlington (UTASCILT) with linguistic scholars from around the world.

Lingua has encouraged, supported, and fostered the study of lesser-studied languages of the world, such as Akposso, Kam, Kadai, Kurdish, Thai, Hausa, Bai, Bulgarian, Vietnamese, Mixe-Zoque, Tamil, Panjabi, Sinhala, Sanskrit, Greek, Hebrew, Angas, Yi, Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Jarai, and Albanian. Lingua's past and current members have conducted research in Albania, Cambodia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Liberia, India, Pakistan, Australia, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Korea, Japan, Russia and all corners of the globe!

The 16th annual UT Arlington Student Conference in Linguistics and TESOL (UTASCILT 16) will be held March 5-6, 2009 (Thurs.-Fri.). More information is available at the conference page. Our keynote speaker will be our new Department Chair, Dr. Colleen Fitzgerald.

Membership

A regular Lingua membership may be held by anyone who is enrolled with the registrar at UT Arlington as taking a University course for credit. An associate membership may be held by anyone else. Contact Lingua at lingua@ling.uta.edu for more information.

Lingua Email List

The Lingua Email List (listserv) is a computer-based way that Lingua members and UTA Linguistics & TESOL students and faculty can share information about what's going on in the linguistics circle at UTA. Once you send your email to the list, your email will be automatically distributed to everyone in the list.

To subscribe to Lingua email list:

  1. From the email account you want to be subscribed, send a new message to the following address: listserv@listserv.uta.edu.
  2. Type "subscribe LING-TESOL xxx xxx" in your message body. (Typing this in the subject line but not the message body will not work.) Do not include any other words; xxx xxx is your name.
  3. Send your message.
  4. Within a minute or so, you should receive a reply welcoming you to the Lingua list.
