I spent a year in the People's Republic of China teaching English and
linguistics at the University of Science and Technology of China
(USTC). The school is located in the town of Hefei, the capital of
Anhui province, a few hours southwest of Nanjing. (See map).
My students were seniors in the English and Science program (see class
photo) and graduate students in the new Linguistics program (see class
photo).
For the 1993/94 school year I lived in the Foreign Experts Guesthouse on
the USTC campus (see annex photo). Instructors from Australia,
Germany, Japan, the Ukraine and the U.S. lived there throughout the
year, as well as short term visitors to the university (see Christmas dinner photo). During the year I took part in many activites with the students, including the Provincial talent show, where our group karaoke won 3rd prize with the song Dong Fang Zhi Zhu (see photo).
During the school year I also took several short trips--to the famous Huang
Shan mountains and to Shanghai and Nanjing. Over the summer break Jeff
and I traveled more widely, visiting Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Suchou, Luoyang, Leshan, Chengdu, and Hong Kong.
