• This class meets on Thursdays from 6:30-9:00 p.m. in 102 Kresge Hall.

• Attendance at all classes is expected and will be reflected in final grades; if you must miss more than one class, please notify me ahead of time so I can help you work around the absences.

• Our texts will be Words in the Mind, 2nd ed. (1994) by Jean Aitchison, and a packet of readings. Both are available from the Norris Center Bookstore.

• Lectures presuppose assigned material. Unless otherwise indicated, you should have read each week's reading before Thursday's class.

• My office is on the 3rd floor of the Linguistics Department, at 2016 Sheridan Road. I'll hold office hours on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:30, and by appointment. • On Oct. 2 we'll meet in the library, for a presentation on the resources available at Northwestern's libraries. Please bring in questions about using the online catalog and accessing library databases.

• Two 1-2 page Summary and Response papers, in which you summarize and comment on your choice of assigned class readings, will be due Oct. 16.

• A one paragraph proposal describing your final project topic will be due Oct. 23.

• The final graded assignment will be a 10-15 page paper on a topic of your choice (which I have approved). The paper can be written individually or with another student in the class. The work can be a research paper based on existing sources, or, you can conduct your own experiment and write up the results. All projects should relate in some way to the topics of the acquisition, understanding, or retrieval of words. Students will be expected to give a brief in-progress presentation to the class describing their project. The oral presentation is mandatory, but will not be graded.

  The paper will be due on the night of our final class meeting, Dec. 11.
