Linguistics B02
Fall 1997
Course Description
This course covers several approaches to the study of word meaning and
use: the storage of words in the mental lexicon (showing why we
sometimes make retrieval mistakes); morphological analysis of new words
(including some clues from the etymology of English words); investigations into perceptual categorization of words and concepts, as well as social uses of terms to categorize people and concepts. The class will provide tools that allow student to become more conscious of the ways they naturally put words to use, as well as presenting new avenues for understanding how speakers and readers determine and recall word meanings.
