The Department of Linguistics & TESOL at The University of Texas at Arlington provides comprehensive training in methods of language analysis, as informed by current linguistic theory and data from a variety of languages. Students receive instruction in the analysis of sound systems (phonetics and phonology), grammar (morphology and syntax), and meaning (semantics and pragmatics); in addition, the program has strengths in language documentation, second language acquisition, and TESOL. Language specializations among the faculty include Native American languages, East and Southeast Asian languages, Austronesian, Spanish, and English.

How well-known is UT Arlington's Linguistics Program?

Since the early 1970's, the UT Arlington Program in Linguistics has awarded over 350 graduate degrees in Linguistics. Students concentrating their studies in linguistics have also earned degrees in related programs such as Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Foreign Languages, and Education.

In 1995, the Chronicle of Higher Education ranked the UT Arlington Program in Linguistics 40th out of 120+ linguistics programs nationwide; at that time, UT Arlington was the only school in the top 40 that did not have a doctoral program, making it the #1 "masters-only" linguistics program in the country.

In 1998, the State of Texas granted permanent approval for a Doctoral Program in Linguistics at UT Arlington, one of three Ph.D. Linguistics programs in Texas and the only such program in North Texas.
